Precision Colectomy for Superior Outcomes at The Happy Gut Clinic, Greater Kailash-1
A diagnosis of colon cancer (colorectal cancer) is a significant medical event that requires a combination of expert surgical intervention and a comprehensive care plan. The primary treatment for colon cancer is surgical removal of the affected segment, a procedure known as a Colectomy. Success in this surgery is measured by two things: the complete removal of the cancer and the preservation of the patient’s long-term bowel function.
At The Happy Gut Clinic, we specialize in world-class surgical oncology. Led by the dual expertise of Dr. Subhashis Das (GI & HPB Oncosurgeon) and Dr. Jayadatt Pawar (Robotic Specialist), we provide advanced Robotic and Laparoscopic Colon Resections in our specialized South Delhi clinic.
The Standards of Modern Colon Cancer Surgery:
Treating colon cancer effectively requires more than just removing the tumor. At The Happy Gut Clinic, we follow stringent international protocols to ensure the best possible long-term survival:
- Complete Mesocolic Excision (CME): This is the gold standard in colon cancer surgery. It involves removing the tumor along with the surrounding “mesentery” (the tissue that carries the blood supply and lymph nodes) in one intact piece. This ensures that any microscopic cancer cells in the lymphatic system are also removed.
- Oncological Margins: We ensure a wide clearance around the tumor to confirm that no cancer cells are left behind at the site of the resection.
- Primary Anastomosis: Whenever possible, our goal is to reconnect the healthy ends of the colon immediately, avoiding the need for a permanent stoma (bag).
Types of Colon Cancer Surgery We Perform:
The type of surgery depends entirely on where the cancer is located within the large intestine:
Right Hemicolectomy
For cancers located in the cecum or the ascending colon (right side), we remove the right side of the colon and reconnect the small intestine to the remaining large intestine.
Left Hemicolectomy
For cancers in the descending colon (left side), the left portion is removed, and the transverse colon is joined to the sigmoid colon.
Sigmoid Colectomy
If the cancer is in the sigmoid colon (the lower part of the colon just above the rectum), we remove this S-shaped segment and reconnect the descending colon to the rectum.
Total or Subtotal Colectomy
In rare cases where there are multiple tumors or a strong genetic predisposition (like HNPCC or FAP), it may be necessary to remove most or all of the colon.
The Robotic Advantage in Colon Oncology:
The colon is located near critical structures like the ureters (tubes from the kidneys), major pelvic nerves, and blood vessels. Dr. Jayadatt Pawar utilizes advanced robotic systems (daVinci / Hugo RAS) to navigate this complex anatomy.
- Nerve-Sparing Precision: Robotic surgery provides a 3D, high-definition view with 10x magnification. This is critical for identifying and preserving the delicate nerves responsible for bladder and sexual function.
- Stable Suturing: Reconnecting the bowel (anastomosis) is the most critical step. Robotic “wristed” instruments allow for incredibly stable and precise suturing, which reduces the risk of an “anastomotic leak,” a serious complication where the connection fails.
- Minimal Trauma: Because the robotic arms are incredibly steady, there is less pulling on the abdominal wall, resulting in much less pain after the surgery.
The Happy Gut Advantage: Why Choose Us?
When facing cancer, the “First Surgery is the Best Chance.” Our team provides:
- Dual-Expert Consultation: You benefit from Dr. Subhashis Das, who ensures the “Oncology” (cancer clearing) is perfect, and Dr. Jayadatt Pawar, who ensures the “Robotic” execution is flawless.
- Fast-Track Recovery (ERAS): We follow “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery” protocols. Most of our colon cancer patients are walking within 24 hours and eating light meals within 48 hours.
- Multi-Disciplinary Coordination: We work as part of a larger team including pathologists, radiologists, and medical oncologists to determine if you need “Adjuvant Chemotherapy” after surgery to prevent recurrence.
Life After Colon Surgery: Restoring Function
Our “Happy Gut” philosophy ensures that your digestion returns to normal as quickly as possible.
- Bowel Training: After removing a segment of the colon, bowel habits may change temporarily. We provide a structured guide on fiber intake and hydration to help your gut adapt.
- Stoma Care (If Required): If a temporary stoma is needed to allow the bowel to heal, our specialized stoma nurse provides complete training and support until the stoma is reversed.
- Long-Term Surveillance: We provide a rigorous follow-up schedule, including regular CEA blood tests and colonoscopies, to ensure you remain cancer-free.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's):
For most colon cancers, a permanent stoma is not required. With modern robotic and laparoscopic techniques, we are almost always able to reconnect the bowel.
Thanks to minimally invasive techniques, most patients are discharged within 4 to 6 days.
It offers superior visualization and precision, which is especially helpful in “nerve-sparing” and achieving better lymph node clearance compared to traditional open surgery.
